1st. Islandmagee Scout Group

Islandmagee Cubs were registered on 14th June 1972 with approximately 10 members. The leader was Meriel Sturdy (nee Templeton). Meriel ran the Cub Section with a number of helpers. There was a committee that would help out on a rota basis.

Shortly after the Cubs were up and running a number of the boys were too old to stay in Cubs and a local coastguard, Brett Cunningham, decided to start up Sea Scouts. This worked well for a number of years. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond his control Brett was transferred to Bangor and no 0ne was willing to take on the position and consequently the section folded.

Over the years there have been numerous leaders in the Cub section from Sherman Hawthorne, Elaine Wareing (nee Esler) and Meryvn Picken. This was when they met at the Temperance Hall on the Low Road, Islandmagee. In 1992 Anne Nicholson (nee Esler) took over the Pack. Later on they moved to the Presbyterian Church on the Lunnon Road where all sections meet at present.
Anne ran the Cubs there together with two of her friends as helpers but it turned out they were not totally committed and they left the pack. This place the future of the pack in jeopardy of folding but fortunately for her an old faithful, her mother Elma, came to help.

In the early 1990's there were only five members in the pack but they turned up faithfully each week and participated in everything that was organised for them.
Anne is still the Cub leader and now has more helpers and the pack has gone from strength to strength.

One of the founder members has now a child in the pack. He recalled the different places he went to camp, the most memorable being Brownseas Island.

Anne has not ventured as far with her pack but instead has camped closer to home from Islandmagee itself to Monkstown and Crawfordsburn.
More recently the pack camped at Kilrea where amongst the activities enjoyed were canoeing, High Ropes, Crate Climbing, team Building and Archery.

With the pack settled down Anne decided in 2001 to start up the Scout section again. At present the troop has more girls than boys. Luckily she gained a leader, Malachy McGahon and he has been running the troop successfully for the past couple of year. They have taken part in beach cleans, first aid etc but more recently he took them to a climbing wall and now we have a few keen climbers in the troop.
Both Cubs and Scouts have taken part in events that have been run by the District. Sometimes they have got on better than others but sure it's the taking part that counts!

Beavers started in the late 1980's with Jennifer Johnston as leader but due to work commitments she was unable to stay with the colony. In 1992 Ivan Blair took over with the help of Elma Esler. He moved to Islandmagee leaving Elma to run the Colony with the help of two young leaders from the Guides.
Elma is still taking the Beavers but has gained another leader, Cherry Townsend, who has recently just completed training and will soon be presented with her wood beads.

We have a few dedicated helpers in all sections of the group who come each week and help to make things run a little smoother. Islandmagee now have all three sections running well with roughly 60 young people attending each week.
